How Many Types of Melasma Are There?
In dermatology, melasma is classified into three main types based on the depth of pigment deposition in the skin.
Each type requires a completely different treatment approach.
1️⃣ Epidermal Melasma
Characteristics
Color: light brown to dark brown
Well-defined borders
Commonly appears on the cheeks, forehead and chin
Pigment is located in the epidermis (outer skin layer)
Causes
Overproduction of melanin triggered by UV exposure, improper skincare or cosmetic irritation
Treatment response
Easiest type to treat
2️⃣ Dermal Melasma
Characteristics
Color: dark brown, grey or bluish-grey
Blurred borders, deep-rooted pigment
Located in the dermis (deeper skin layer)
Causes
Long-term melanocyte stimulation
Weak or damaged skin barrier, history of aggressive laser treatments, topical steroid or whitening cream misuse
Treatment response
Most difficult type to treat
3️⃣ Mixed Melasma
Characteristics
Combination of superficial brown patches and deeper greyish pigment
Commonly seen in clients with long-standing melasma
Treatment response
Requires a multi-layer, fully personalised treatment protocol
Longer treatment duration with consistent maintenance care
Why Is Correct Classification So Important?
Each type of melasma requires a completely different treatment strategy.
Treating the wrong skin layer may lead to darkening, frequent relapse and permanent skin barrier damage.
