MELASMA & ACNE – SHOULD THEY BE TREATED AT THE SAME TIME?
Many clients wonder whether melasma and acne can be treated simultaneously. From a dermatological perspective, the answer is NO – in most cases, they should not be treated at the same time.
When the skin is affected by inflammatory acne, the skin barrier is compromised and becomes more sensitive.
Melasma treatments such as laser, microneedling, chemical peels, brightening agents, or mesotherapy may increase the risk of irritation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) if performed on an unstable skin condition.
Treating both conditions in the wrong sequence can:
Worsen acne inflammation
Darken pigmentation
Prolong recovery time and reduce treatment effectiveness
📌 Correct, Professional Treatment Protocol
1️⃣ Prioritize acne treatment first
→ Control inflammation, reduce congestion, balance sebum production, and restore the skin barrier.
2️⃣ Once acne is under control and the skin is stable
→ Begin melasma treatment using appropriate, individualized methods.
⚠️ Important Notes
In cases of mild, non-inflammatory acne, a physician may consider combining gentle brightening products at a safe level. However, aggressive or invasive pigmentation treatments should not be performed simultaneously.
Every skin type and condition is different. Self-treatment at home is not recommended.
